Emergency Shelter

At any given moment, between three and four thousand Calgarians find themselves without a bed to call their own. The reasons for their homelessness are unique and many. But their need for a welcoming place of warmth, comfort, and safety is universal.

For nearly one third of those people, that place is the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre.

Since 1986, we have provided temporary overnight beds to men and women who would otherwise be forced to sleep under bridge decks, tucked in alleyways, and hidden in city parks. We offer them a place of comfort and security that ensures they will live to see another morning and have the rest they need to maintain their health, to find or continue working, and ideally seek out more permanent living arrangements.

The Calgary Drop-In Centre offers over 960 emergency shelter beds on a first-come, first-served basis. Every one of which is occupied by the time the lights are turned off each night at 9:00pm.

I am pretty impressed with the service provided by ESS especially when I consider the various circumstances beyond your control that you may have to contend with! It is a huge relief to NOT spend my time completing a bunch of forms every time I need casual labour or spend my money paying an employment service; I could not afford to do that!

What is really amazing to me is that is every bit as effective, and even more efficient in providing casual labour than the employment services that charge!
