Computers for Low Income Calgarians

Not long ago, owning a mobile phone or a computer with internet access was a luxury. But those days have passed. Today’s world demands a level of connectivity few people would have dreamed of even a decade ago. Whether for work, school, or staying in contact with friends and loved ones, devices that were once considered a status symbol are now essential tools for getting through day-to-day life.

The problem? Even though the technology has become ubiquitous, the cost to access it is still prohibitive for anyone living near or below the poverty line. And worse? With the rate todays devices are evolving, many of old and unwanted ones are ending up in the landfill — creating nothing short of an environmental catastrophe.

Computers for Low Income Calgarians (CLIC) aims to break down the barriers that prevent men and women living in poverty from access to the technology they need to work, live and thrive, while at the same time curbing the rate old and unwanted electronics make their way into the wastebasket.

We accept electronics donations of all kinds, including computers, tablets and mobile phones. We then securely erase all data, refurbish, add up-to-date software, and redistribute these items to people in need. Any electronics that cannot be used by the CLIC program are sold to organizations who will recycle them in an environmentally friendly way, with all funds going directly to support poverty reduction programs and services at the Calgary Drop-In Centre.

I am pretty impressed with the service provided by ESS especially when I consider the various circumstances beyond your control that you may have to contend with! It is a huge relief to NOT spend my time completing a bunch of forms every time I need casual labour or spend my money paying an employment service; I could not afford to do that!

What is really amazing to me is that is every bit as effective, and even more efficient in providing casual labour than the employment services that charge!
