A common misconception is that people experiencing homelessness do not work. In truth, the majority of people experiencing homelessness generate an income and many of them are simply seeking opportunities for employment. Our Employment Services Staffing (ESS) facilitates an Employment Program that connects workers with employers.
Through our Employment Program, the Calgary Drop-In connects skilled or pre-screened workers with employers throughout the city in a variety of job placements. We offer this service at no charge to employers or workers and the standard method of payment to workers is cash daily. Individuals referred to employers are offered a healthy bagged lunch, bus ticket, and basic safety equipment such as work gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, and coveralls when available. Highly motivated workers are often offered longer term or permanent employment.
ESS Services also include:
- Applying for jobs online
- Writing and/or updating cover letters and resumes
- Calling employers
- Information on renewing or replacing safety tickets
- Creating industry focused resumes
- Mock interviews
- Career planning
- Faxing resumes
- Exploring schooling/training options
I am pretty impressed with the service provided by ESS especially when I consider the various circumstances beyond your control that you may have to contend with! It is a huge relief to NOT spend my time completing a bunch of forms every time I need casual labour or spend my money paying an employment service; I could not afford to do that!
What is really amazing to me is that is every bit as effective, and even more efficient in providing casual labour than the employment services that charge!J. Marshall
